2. Schaff's preoccupation with the nature and purpose of church history led him to write the first history of church historiography originating on American soil, as well as the first American exposition of the "idea of 'organic' development" in its import for church history. Both feats were accomplished in 1846 in his little book, What Is Church History? A Vindication of the Idea of Historical Development. 5 Baur had been one of Schaff's professors at Tübingen in 183739, and the young student obviously "appropriated" some of his teacher's most original constructs.

Those words have stood, in one language or another, on the pages of everyone's Psalter throughout the centuries, but not everyone has drawn from them the conclusion that the chronological review of the history of the church, with its institutions, practices, and beliefs, is a key to the understanding of the church and the gospel.
